Lamborghini debuts Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder in LA

By Justin Couture, MSN Autos

Earlier this year, Lamborghini gave its “baby” Gallardo a major upgrade. Building off the Gallardo Superleggera, Lamborghini outfitted the standard version it with a bigger, more technically advanced engine, an improved gearbox and mildly tweaked its looks. Together, these updates make the Gallardo LP560-4 an even stronger performer on the road and on the track.

For the Los Angeles Auto Show, Lamborghini revealed the Spyder version of the LP560-4. Just like its hardtop brother, the Spyder features a 5.2-litre V10 engine that makes 552 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. In spite of its additional power, Lamborghini managed to make the engine 18-percent more fuel efficient, with significant reductions in fuel economy. Not bad!

Because the Spyder is heavier than the regular Gallardo LP560-4, it is fractionally slower to 100 km/h. It now takes four seconds flat, some 0.3 seconds more than the coupe... and Ferrari’s new F430 Spider Scuderia 16M. Provided the cloth roof is in place, Lamborghini says that the LP560-4 shouldn’t have any difficulties reaching 324 km/h, which is 9 km/h more than the Ferrari's lightweight F430.

All other visual and mechanical changes that the regular LP560-4 features have been grafted onto the Spyder, including new headlamps with LED stunning daytime running lights, a reverse camera, plus the lighter and faster-reacting all wheel drive system. The L560-4 comes standard with E-gear, Lamborghini’s six-speed sequential paddleshift transmission.

No word on pricing yet, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Spyder had a $225,000+ US dollar price tag.
