New '09 Mazda MX-5 making North American debut in Chicago

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

Mx-5-01 It's been a while since Mazda's refreshed MX-5 made its international debut (Paris auto show, last September), but now, the world's best-selling roadster - certified by Guinness World Records - is ready for its North America debut. It will be shown at the Chicago auto show, which starts Feb. 10.

Most of the MX-5's upgrades focus around refreshing the car's looks. The car's new nose is now in line with Mazda's latest models - most notably the new "smiling" Mazda3 and Mazda6. Our MX-5 is slightly different than the Japanese models in that it has amber corner markers located by the front fog lamps, rather than by the front wheels.

Ultimate Edition marks final hurrah for Honda's S2000

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

S2000-01 With global production of the S2000 roadster scheduled to end this coming June, Honda has put together a special send-off for its performance roadster. Called the Ultimate Edition, it will be making its debut at the Geneva auto show in March.

Sadly, for North American fans, the S2000 Ultimate Edition looks to be a European-exclusive model. It is powered by a 2.0-litre engine, which makes 237 horsepower and 153 lb.-ft. of torque - the original engine the S2000 featured when it arrived nine years ago.

While North American-market S2000s were upgraded to a torquier 2.2-litre inline-four in 2004, Europe's cars carried on with the original mill, which is capable of revving to 9,000 rpm. As with all S2000s, the Ultimate Edition is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

First look: 2010 Porsche 911 GT3

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

06 Last autumn, Porsche's new and improved 911 hit Canadian dealerships. Available in coupe, convertible and Targa bodystyles with two engine choices as well as the brand's new double-clutch gearbox, the revitalized rear-engined icon is in good form. With the basics covered, Porsche has moved on to improve its high-performance GT3 model.

The GT3 is powered by a bigger, stronger heart. At 3.8 litres in displacement, the flat-six is 0.2L larger and has a 20-horsepower advantage over the outgoing model. Total power is 435 bhp. The engine is also more intelligent; it now features Porsche's VarioCam valve timing system on both intake and exhaust camshafts. This improves mid and low-end torque, reducing the previous engine's peaky character. This should make the GT3 a little less strenuous to drive on a day-to-day basis.

World Car of the Year candidates announced

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

Volkswagen's new Golf is in the running for 2009 World Car of the Year. (Photo: Volkswagen) As with the film industry, the start of a new year means it's award ceremony season. The title of 2009 North American Car and Truck of the Year have been awarded, and a few days ago, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada announced its shortlist for 2009 Canadian Car of the Year. Now, the international journalists behind the World Car of the Year awards have released their top 11 picks for 2009 World Car of the Year and top 10 picks for World Performance Car of the Year.

This year's lists include a wide variety of vehicles, ranging from tiny city cars, to six-figure luxury and exotics.

Bentley's bioethanol-powered speed demon

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

A first look at the new Bentley bioethanol-powered supercar. (Photo: Bentley) At this year's Detroit auto show, Bentley dropped a hint at a forthcoming vehicle - a bioethanol-powered supercar. It's also being described as its "fastest, most powerful production car ever." The announcement is a pretty big deal for Bentley as it's the first time that the prestige brand is working with alternative fuels. In preparation for its debut in Geneva, Bentley released an image of the vehicle, though it's yet to be named and there are no technical details available.

Based on the Continental GT two-door, the ethanol-powered supercar is differentiated by headlamps with black-painted housings, additional hood vents, plus a new front valance with vertical intakes. Painted in white and veiled in shadows, I can't help but see a (slight) resemblance to a happy-looking puppy.

Mitsubishi's odd i MiEV Air Sport Concept headed to Geneva

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

This weird lookin' fella is the Mitsubishi i MiEV Air Sport Concept. (Photo: Mitsubishi) With growing support for electric-powered vehicles, the idea of an electric sports car is turning out to be less of a novelty and more of a genuine business opportunity. Tesla's Roadster is already on sale, and the electric sports car league is expanding with the range-extension Fisker Karma, the JJAD P1-E, and the 700-hp Lightning GT.

It's great that electric sports cars are popping up, and that they're being taken seriously but for the time being, they're more or less toys for the wealthy. Not everyone can afford a vehicle that starts in the neighbourhood of $75,000 - $100,000.

Mitsubishi's latest concept is a response to this dilemma. It's called the i MiEV Sport Air Concept, and it will be shown for the first time at the Geneva auto show in March.

Europe meets its Volt - Opel Ampera Concept

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

Ampera. Like a Volt, but more European. (Photo: Opel) Chevrolet is not a particularly large or strong brand in Europe. Though its cars and SUVs have been available in Europe on an off-and-on basis over the years, their yearly sales numbers have been extremely small - a fraction of what the brand sells in North America. Only in 2005 did General Motors officially bring Chevrolet over as an entry-level brand, backing it with a full dealership network.

Perhaps Chevrolet's biggest claim to fame across the Atlantic is that it is the maker of the Lacetti, which is used in Top Gear's "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment. That car was formerly sold in Canada as the Optra Sedan.

And while Chevrolet is having success in Europe, GM made the decision last year that it isn’t the right brand to purvey the Volt or its technology. As a result, Opel will be selling the vehicle instead, and it's previewing its version at this year's Geneva auto show.

Britain's new Tesla-beater - P1-E electric sports car

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

The P1-E project has some pretty impressive manpower behind it. (Photo: JJAD) If there’s something to admire about Britain’s sports car scene, it’s that it is constantly bubbling with activity from well-established companies and upstarts alike. If it’s a 1,000 horsepower-per-ton screamer, a superbike-powered track car, or a luxurious, suave grand tourer you’re after, Britain’s got the answer. You could say that when it comes to automotive performance, Britain has things covered.

But what about “green” power? Well, there’s Britain’s own Lightning Car Co. which purveys the 700-hp electric GT, but there will soon be a new alternative. It’s called P1-E, which its maker, JJAD, claims, “is one of the world’s first purpose-built electric sports cars.”

At the head of the P1-E project is Jim Dowle, who, prior to starting JJAD, worked at McLaren on the F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR projects. Dowle also worked with two Formula One race teams, and was a test driver for McLaren. Naturally, with such an impressive C.V., expectations for the P1-E are quite high.

Thanks, but no thanks: GM turns down $3B Canadian federal emergency aid

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

Following the US$17.4-billion lifeline that the U.S. government threw to the Detroit Three automakers, the Canadian government stepped up to bat and proposed its own US$4-billion federal aid package to prevent our auto sector from collapsing.

Of the sum total, General Motors of Canada was allocated US$3B, with US$1B set aside for Chrysler. But it turns out that GM of Canada doesn’t want the cash.

The Windsor Star reports that Stew Low, GM of Canada’s director of public relations said the company has taken steps to conserve capital in its ongoing restructuring. He also stated that it was important for the company to work with its stakeholders before turning to the government for help. Prime Minister Stephen Harper confirmed this information as well in an interview on the television program Focus Ontario.

Canadian Car of the Year finalists announced

By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

The Mazda6, winner of Best New Family Car ($22k-$30k) award - could it win 2009 Car of the Year? (Photo: Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos) The shortlist of finalists for 2009 Canadian Car of the Year were announced yesterday. To be very honest, out of the 50+ vehicles eligible for competing, it was pretty obvious which vehicles would make the final cut.

The top three cars in the running for 2009 Canadian Car of the Year are the Hyundai Genesis, the Mazda6 and the Toyota Corolla. Each of these vehicles also won the top honours in their respective segment; the Hyundai won Best New Luxury Car (under $50k); the Mazda6 won Best New Family Car ($22k-$30k), and the Corolla won Best New Small Car (under $18k).

The title of Car of the Year is likely to be a pretty close fight to the end. Hyundai’s Genesis has lived up to its hype, winning the title  of 2009 North American Car of the Year. Mazda’s 6 has always fared well in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) awards; the previous generation won three “Best New” awards, each respective body style picking up a trophy. Though the Corolla doesn’t have the same track record as far as AJAC awards go, this latest model is well equipped with safety features and is priced extremely competitively - something that should appeal to Canadians looking for solid, affordable transportation.
