Discreet speed: Jaguar launches 470-hp XF Supercharged
By Justin Couture
Though Jaguar's XF has only been out for a bit more than a year in Canada, Jaguar has been hard at work, sharpening the luxury sedan’s claws. For 2010, it launched a new naturally aspirated, 385-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 engine for the XF Premium Luxury model, and the 510-horsepower supercharged XFR. The latter model is the range topper, complete with performance-enhanced suspension, brakes and an aggressive-looking exterior.
In terms of pricing and performance, the gap between the XF Premium Luxury and the XFR is fairly sizeable. Jaguar decided to span it with a new model, the XF Supercharged, which pairs more grunt with a more discreet styling. Key visual differences include a standard 20-inch wheels, a subtle rear spoiler, quad exhaust tips and silver-gray painted brake calipers; these aside, it looks mostly like a regular XF.
Inside, the changes are also quite mild; the leather trim on the door panels and dashboard feature contrast stitching, Oak wood trim, a heated steering wheel and a suede-finish headliner.
The XF Supercharged is powered by the same 5.0-litre supercharged V8 that the XFR boasts, but its output has been trimmed back. Instead of churning out 510 horsepower it makes a mere 470. Torque is rated at 424 lb.-ft.
Still, that's nothing to scoff at - it's more than a BMW 550i, Audi S6, or Mercedes-Benz E550, and is good enough to rocket the big sedan to 96 km/h from still in less than five seconds.
Pricing and availability has yet to be announced for the Canadian market, but expect it to retail for around $80,000.
