Toyota temporarily stopping sale of recalled vehicles
By MSN Autos
Toyota is suspending the sale of eight models sold in Canada and the U.S. to fix a sticking gas pedal in a recall announced last week.
The Japanese automaker is recalling approximately 270,000 vehicles in Canada to fix the accelerator pedal on the following vehicles:
2009-2010 Toyota RAV4
2009-2010 Toyota Corolla
2009-2010 Toyota Matrix
2005-2010 Toyota Avalon
2007-2010 Toyota Camry (specific models)
2010 Toyota Highlander
2007-2010 Toyota Tundra
2008-2010 Toyota Sequoia
Toyota Canada Inc. says the sales ban and recall is confined to Toyota vehicles, and does not include vehicles under the Lexus and Scion brands. The company says there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. The sticking gas pedal issue is a separate recall from the ongoing recall regarding floor mats in Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
The carmaker is also halting production at its five North American facilities for the week of Feb. 1.
For more details about the recall, contact your local Toyota dealer, visit toyota.ca or call the customer centre at 1-888-869-6828.

Yes, this has happened to me. After receiving our brand new 2010 Matrix we felt it would be wize to purchase snow tires. We went back to the dealer and spent another $900.00 for tires. We also installed Rubbermaid Floor mats to help protect the floor carpeting. Working in the Barrie area, we had a good snowfall during the day. The parking lot had not been plowed. I started the car, put it in gear and pushed down on the accelerator firmly, well... I went racing accross the parking lot with the throttle stuck down. Realizing what was happening I pushed down hard on the brakes and after a few moments managed to free up the accelerator pedal and not crash into anything. Seems the gas pedal got stuck to the floor mat, so I moved the mat as far back as possible where it sits today. Now I think I'll take it out completely, my kids drive the car and might not handle the same situation, with the same results! Another note; I also bought the same Rubbermaid mats for my wife's 2008 Yaris, (it's a standard) she tried to start the car with the new mats and found the car wouldn't even start. Seems the clutch must be fully depressed for the car to start which the new mats prevented. She realized the problem and her driver side mat is in the trunk! I love Toyota but I wonder if they are slipping. I was also not happy with their customer service our last visit to the dealer. I fear complacency breeds contempt.

I don't even own a Toyota, but from what I've heard, they still are the best vehicles in the world. Yes they're having a problem, but who doesn't?? As far as I'm concerned they're doing the best job of handling this situation than any of the big three. They're stopping all production instead of continuously installing them in the cars. You know how much additional money they're losing out on by doing this?? If it was any of the other companies, such as GM, they wouldn't even flinch. It doesn't even have anything to do with manufacturing...it's engineering. Whether it's a company, or any regular joe, all of you know you would still do anything to get an extra buck. But Toyota is admitting their mistake, and dealing with it the best was they can. As far as I'm concerned, they're being responsible. It's pretty sad the GM and Chrysler had to wait for their plants to shut down in order for them to finally make a decent vehicle. Toyota has for years, and now that they finally make a mistake-and are admitting to it-everyone thinks it's the end. Stop feeding off what the media tells you people...just think of what you would do in that situation.

I have a 2006 Matrix 4wd that has been the best car I've ever owned. In almost 4 years and 60,000 kms it hasn't even had a burnt out lightbulb yet. All I've ever done is changed the oil and drove. I live in the Yukon and we drive this car in 40 below zero, without the wind chill! No sticking gas pedals or any other problems.
Obviously other people have had different experiences with thier Toyota. This is my first vehicle built by Toyota but I would definately buy one again. Unlike my Chevy truck which had a leaking transmission before 20,000 kms and worn out ball joints at less than three years old.

I just read the article in the press from Kristine Owram cp, Toyota took immediate action, ?? what??, this has been going on for years, quit being easy on Toyota, if it were a domestic manufacturer the press would be all over it and front page news across the country and most likely saying to buy Japanese....Just my two cents worth!

You people can go on and complain about your toyota's. If this story involved GM or a Ford product there would be people on here complaining about that too. You people have to remember that you are buying a vehicle, no vehicles are perfect, they all have defects. So of the 2.4 million Toyota's sold, there have been 5 cases of gas pedals sticking? I'm not mathematician but i'd say that's a fairly small percentage. I've been driving a toyota since as long as i can remember and that is all i will drive for the rest of my life. All brands, all models of vehicles have caused deaths in one way or another, and will contunue to do so.

I agree with the people saying that Toyota had been producing crap lately. In their effort to pass GM as the number 1 auto maker they have sold themselves down the river. But then Japanese cars have always had crappy sheet metal, and really only got by on their mechanicals. Seriously, look around for any old Asian cars. The Hyundai Ponys rusted out in three years. And you hardly ever see a 15-20 year old Japanese car still on the road? Rare as hens teeth. Right now in my home town a guy put his 2005 Kia on his front lawn with a huge sign that says: "Lifespan of our Kia = 4 years, thinking of a Kia? Our advice is DON'T". My ex's Kia Rio was scrapped after 4 years. PATHETIC! And Toyota trucks with rusted out frames after 4-5 years? What's that?!?!......It's about time we started buying domestic again because really, this isn't 1984 any more. The domestics are building great cars. Yeah the imports gave the domestics the kick in the ass they needed, but those days are over. Time to take pride in our brands again. And I also agree that the media is biased towards imports. They jumped all over GM when the gas tanks were exploding, even though they met federal regulations. Where is NBC news now? I bet they aren't firing rockets at Toyotas are they? Don't even get me started on rags like Road and Track and Car and Driver. They won't give credit to anything that doesn't have the letters BMW in the name.

Quite a few bloggers mention that Toyota had become to confident and complacent. It took its customers for granted assuming past quality was a guarantee of present and future sales.Even the present CEO of Toyota appears to admit to such.
Admiral Yamamoto is quoted as saying after the attack on Pearl Harbor ,that he feared it would only serve to wake a sleeping giant.
Toyota is such a sleeping giant ,and I suspect has just had its wake-up call.
And that's not good news if you're one of Toyota's competitors.

Do you think Toyota stands for Thousands of You Own That Anteque. it is time you woke up and bought to imploy in America. Japan is still running plants in Japan.

19 people have died. (not a big deal to toyota fans apparently).
more vehicles are being recalled than toyota produced last year. all this during their highest production year (#1 remember). (fans and media would like our attention on the " #1 " part of the information only).
the stuck accelerator problem has been traced back as far as 2002. (apparently a sign that toyota is being "responsible and acting quickly to fix this problem"). for the rest of us who live in linear time, THAT STILL IS 8 YEARS.
they have halted production and sales of the offending models (this apparently is not a sign that they have seriously screwed up)
and the media spin is that the faulty parts are made in ontario (the innuendo being that the problem is traced to north american sources of course. COMPLETELY IGNORING THE FACT that the supplier does not design or engineer the part. toyota does.)
3% of the same part (engineered by toyota) is produced by that supplier. the other 97% of their accelerator parts (not engineered by toyota) ARE FINE.
ya, you toyota fans are right.....everyone else is being unreasonable and should not even mention this.

The domestics did build some lousy cars, no doubt, funny everyone seems to forget all the foriegn rust buckets that didn't last 5 years. How does anyone expect us to rebound from this reccession if we keep buying foriegn products. You can't maintain your lofty standard of living and buy everything from China, come on people, wake up. We are all guilty of it, you lost your 30 to 40 dollar an hour manufacturing job in the U.S. at the same time as you were buying everything at Wal Mart, what did you think was going to happen? Let's start manufacturing and buying our own product, yes it will be more expensive but you will get to keep your job!

Those of you that say you had a domestic vehicle 10 years ago and had many problems and now have newer toyota with no problems need to check the facts. Most auto manufactures improve quality yearly with the exception of a few like toyota and chrysler. If you compared a 95 ford and a 95 toyota the toyota was better. If you compare a 2008 or 9 ford to a 2008 or 9 toyota the ford kicks butt. Truth is toyota was too concerned about being in control of the world that they forgot what got them there. Ford is now the worlds number 1 vehicle for quality and maybe because they have seen the downfalls of lesser quality in the past. Not only that, if we had all suported north american based companies we would not have seen all our money go to bail out so many big buisnesses. Ford is the most responsible car company out there because they fixed everything they were doing wrong without government involvment. ONLY FORD IN MY DRIVEWAY

Ever wonder why Kyle Busch is always driving sideways in the corners. Truth is his gas pedal was stuck and he was holding on for dear life. And we thought he was just a good driver.

I like it Consumers Report did not see this coming, you think those tests were made by the road test dummies and it was them that sold America on a well built car that rivals any thing built in America. Safe at any speed and you have no need for an accelerator, brake or floor mats . Toyota did in fact pump out more cars than and surpassed GM why GM was down Toyota kicked the company and their for the workers . The shoe is on the other foot and America should boot Consumers report and Japan for its total lack of reliability.

I have a 1988 Toyota Corolla 4wd and was made and assembled in Japan. My dad used to drive it but gave it to me after he had a stroke. It's been with my family for 22 years. This car has been very reliable, dependable and hasn't let us down ever since. The car runs like new because we know how to maintain and take care of all our cars unlike some people. Before the Corolla my dad owned a 1977 and 1985 Chrysler vans and always ended up at the repair shop with a different problem everytime.I'm saddened by Toyota's current problems and I hope they solve them quickly so they could move forward.I respect other peoples comments and the other car companies but at the same time I feel very disappointed and disgusted because some people commenting here don't think and research their facts before criticizing Toyota.Toyota is not a perfect company because nothing is perfect in this world, always remember that.I've seen many commercials on television and newspaper ads by the competition and they keep comparing their products to Toyota claiming they're better, nothing wrong with that but when Toyota makes a commercial they only talk about their own products without comparing them to the competition.I love of my car and I will continue supporting Toyota until the day I die.

Hello....I think the fact that Toyota has come forward and apologized and recalled all these different makes is very noble, they are taking the blame and not blaming anyone else...unlike Ford when thier tires from Firestone were blowing up and of course as usual putting the blame elsewhere.Toyota is a very reputable car company and I think that the majority of comments out there are always of course on the negetive.......at least they did not claim bankrupcy.....GM and Chrysler!!!!!

Toyota was ORDERED by the NHTSA in the US to cease selling the defective products . . . the Cdn media plays it like Toyota is doing you all a big favour, the media types don't want to upset the advertisers. This problem started nearly a decade ago, Toyota has made excuses, blamed customers and tried to defect. Read the december article in the LA Times . . . . just search "LA Times Dec Toyota" . . . . and get the real story.
Also check out The CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY ENGINEERING is strongly requesting a CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION of TOYOTA & NHTSA.

yaright . . . . part built from Toyota engineering drawings . . . FACT!!!
Same problems in Japan and with Lexus cars . . . stay tuned . . . this will get even more interesting.
And of course the attempted cover-up . . . that is the real story . . . how Toyota tries to bury their problems and keep them secret . . . for years . . . .

a short spelling lesson for "johncando".
#1 - try antique - instead of 'anteque'
#2 - employ instead of ' imploy'.
