Dodge leaks images of new 2011 Durango
While large body-on-frame SUV are falling out of favour, large unibody crossovers that kinda look like SUVs are gaining strength. Witness the recent reveal of the Ford Explorer, Kia’s stylish Sorento, and the continued popularity of the GM Acadia/Enclave/Traverse triplets.
So it’s no real surprise to discover that Dodge’s old body-on-frame Durango is carrying very little over when its new generation debuts for the 2011 model year. Rather than sharing a frame with the Dakota pickup truck, it shares a unibody chassis with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which in turn borrows it from the Mercedes-Benz ML Class. But while the Jeep on has two rows of seats, the Durango will keep its traditional three rows, differentiating the two vehicles.
Both will use the new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and 5.7-litre HEMI V8’s, and will feature some sort of all-wheel drive system. While the other details remain unconfirmed, Dodge officials have expressed a desire to make future products genuinely attractive to customers with more than just a low price tag. So expect the Durango to arrive with good use of cabin materials, some innovative features, and be a decent drive.
We’ll keep you updated when find out more information, but in the meantime, you can visit the official preview page.

I like it!
They had to do something, as the Durango was getting really long in the teeth. Now if only they could fix the Dakota, their lineup would be complete!

It's definetly an improvement over previous models.
I'm glad they kept the 5.7 L Hemi.
Hopefully an SRT/8 - 6.1 L version is in the works too!

Haiving driven the 2011 Gran Cherokee, if this Durango is half as good, it will still be a winner. That new GC is really, really good. Very European.

Ok. Just to let you people in on a couple of things. I used to work for dodge/chrysler and believe me, their cars are not the greatest, at all. Are they better than Chev...no, they're equal. Is dodge/chrysler run better than chev/gm or ford?? No! why do you think that GM and Dodge/Chrysler went into receivership and had to have 2 countries govt's bail them out?? Ford are better built, and a better run company. But still, NO DOMESTIC even comes close to Honda or Toyota. I spent 15 years in the automotive industry. Have owned Jeep, Ford, GM, Honda, and Toyota. The majority I've owned have been honda. I just sold my 90 accord with almost 500,000km on it. The interior was like new, no rattles, no problems. Original engine, transmission, etc. Let's see a dodge do that? They won't! (except the diesel...but oh yeah...that's not a chrysler engine).
It doesn't matter what you do to a piece of crap....it's still a piece of crap.
It does look nice, I'll give it that. But you can expect the same old crappy fit and finish, crappy fuel mileage, and crappy quality. Domestic vehicles won't beat the quality of the Jap cars...and the Jap dealership service. I could write paragraphs and paragraphs on how domestic dealers are run (even VW and they're not classified domestic..although built domestically...) anywhere from the front sales, to the techs, to the detail bays, to the parts departments, to the used departments and the service (as I call "circus") advisors. But I won't bore you with that stuff, as that would turn you off domestics for good!!
Cheers!

I wish someone would consider that Canadians are REAL consumers and have the Dodge web site reflect that. If you are from Canada, you will not be able to access this preview. There is no place to insert a Canadian province or postal code. I hope the people who designed this web site are not indicative of the people designing Dodge vehicles.

To "FOTOMAN" I work for Toyota and I can tell you their stuff is crap, I see it every day, garbage gets pushed through...it`s enough to make jap car lovers like you cry!
by-the-way I have a 1990 pontiac sunbird that has 650,000 k`s with nothing ever done to it, still runs like new, still looks great, not to mention it gets way better gas mileage than any jap car could ever dream of!
As for the fit and finish part of your diatribe (I`m still laughing) I previously worked for an automotive parts supplier who made parts for honda, chrysler, toyota, Ford, and GM...do you know that all of these parts were made on the exact same piece of equipment using the exact same material as well as the exact same employees using the exact same quality devices?...yet somehow you say the japanese are superior?..how can this be when all are the exact same?
You say you have been in the automotive business for 15 years?...I suspect you`ve had your head up your ass for much longer!

They are certainly not showing much of the new Durango even on the preview link. I've always liked the look of the Durango ever since it was first launched. If they increase the tow capacity, I might even concider owning one. Other then that from a towing capability prospective, I would never own a Dodge product.
As for the last 2 comments, All vehicles are crap. They are the worst investment ever. No make of vehicle will ever last longer then any other. If you look after your vehicle really well it just may last a little longer. Todays automakers design vehicles for looks not to last.

For Risestar....The same people with the same material using the same equipment don't mean the specifications are the same. Domestics have a long long way to go, the odds of a domestic lasting as long as a Jap car are rare, but as you indicated, it can happen.

@Gordon Drysdale
I am in Canada, and the site works perfectly for me.
@Fotoman
While I too have a Honda, I also had a '79 Ford Pinto (yes I said that right...a Pinto) that I had well over 300000km on. Original everything, and other than normal wear parts, ran like a top. No, gas mileage isn't in the realm of the Civic or Tercel.....but still got low 30mpg, and I didn't need a shoe horn to get in and out of it.....I miss that car! LOL

I will state that every manufacturer has their "good" cars and their "lemons" that come off the assembly line. After all...there are humans involved and mistakes will happen. Even the robots are programmed by humans.
Risestar - Like Bluestar stated. They may have been the same "equipment", but you look at the fit and finish between domestic and Jap. Look at the tolerances. I've worked domestic, German, and Jap...the best quality was Jap (from my experience). The best run manufacturer and dealerships were Jap (from my experience).
I don't know where you're located, but there's no need to say I've had my head up my ass. I'm talking from MY experience, and the dealerships and manufacturers that I've worked for. It's people like you that get in bar fights and end up in hospital because you don't know how to civily deal with people.

Want an unbiased opinion? ask a mechanic at an independent garage. Odds are that they will mention different model vehicles be it foreign or domestic, rather make a general statement of a specific manufacturer or country of origin. I've owned vehicles each from the "big three" and Japanese as well.. I can't honestly say that one has stood out from the other when it came to repairs or longevity. I think the lesson was learned during the 70s and 80s where everyone was building crap. Unfortunetly for the domestic automakers, the foreign automakers cleaned up their act by improving on quality alot sooner, and as a result, domestic auto sales as well as thier reputations suffered. Some of those old attitudes still exist today by some, but I don't feel that they are warranted.

I've been in the car biz since 1991. The current lineup from DOdge, GM and Ford equals the product coming out of Japan, and equals the Europeans in terms of quality. The Europeans still build a more interesting, better handling, and more enjoyable car though.
I am not a huge fan of domestic cars, but the current lineup from Chrysler, GM, and Frod is really quite good.
And having seen what the "new" Chrysler is capable of (2011 Grand Cherokee, 2011 Ram HD) then I have high hopes for the new Durango, and the otehr new products coming out soon.

And another thing. WHy do Toyota people always have to jump in to every post on this site and defend their cars or try to push their cars into discussions that have nothing to do with their cars?
