11 things you don't know about Robert Herjavec - the racecar driver

Robert-ferrari-2

By MSN Autos

Robert Herjavec, business mogul and star of CBC’s Dragons’ Den and ABC's Shark Tank, will take to the streets of Toronto this weekend in the Ferrari Challenge series. The series offers Ferrari owners a chance to take specially prepared cars to the track in a friendly but competitive race environment.

Following a race at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal last month, Robert will race his Ferrari 458 Challenge car on the streets of Canada’s biggest city. Not only does this event mark the first time the Ferrari Challenge has taken place in Toronto, it’s also the first time it’s taking place on an urban, street-based course.

Earlier this week, we had a chance to talk to Robert about his love of cars and racing.

Canadian scores Indy 500 pole, two others join strong field

AlexTagliani-Indy

By Mark Atkinson for MSN Autos

The strongest Indy 500 field in years will be led to the green flag by a Canadian for the first time ever. Veteran open-wheel driver Alex Tagliani put on an impressive display of speed this past Saturday to put his Sam Schmidt Racing car on pole, ahead of entries from Target Chip Ganassi, Penske Racing and others. That Tagliani's team has but a fraction of the funding compared to the colossus one-two of Ganassi and Penske makes it even more impressive.

He'll be joined by Scott Dixon and Oriol Servia on the front row for the 100th anniversary race on May 29.

Other Canadian successes include rookie James Hinchcliffe starting 13th, and the raucus Paul Tracy back in 25th. Tracy was forced to qualify on Bump Day this past Sunday after rain delayed his shot at the field the day before. Considering he didn't make the race in 2010, this has to be a very special feeling.

A fourth Canadian, Patick Carpentier looked like he might make the field as a substitite driver for the really quite terrible American Scott Speed, but Carpentier tagged the wall after only a few laps, and retured for the day.

Photos and full qualifying results can be found here.

Those interested in watching the race can tune into TSN starting at noon EDT May 29.

Paul Tracy confirmed for Honda Indy Toronto, Edmonton

PaulTracy

By Mark Atkinson for MSN Autos

Paul Tracy is never one to shy away from the spotlight, and 'The Trill From West Hill' will be at Exhibition Place in Toronto later today to discuss his upcoming appearances at the Honda Indy Toronto with the local media. Honda Canada is sponsoring the Canadian driver for the third year running, and have once again parterned with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help raise money for charity. Last year, over $112,000 was collected, and everyone involved is trying to surpass that figure for 2011.

Tracy too, is hoping for a better performance than his 13th-place finish in 2010, and might have the car to do it.

He won't be the only Canadian in the field either. Veteran Alex Tagliani of Quebec will compete once again, while rookie James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, ON is looking forward to getting his first laps in at Exhibition Place behind the wheel of an IndyCar. Hinch's team - Newman/Haas Racing - has plenty of experience winning in Toronto: former driver Michael Andretti won here seven times, five of those with NHR.

Besides the IndyCar show, there will be competition from the Firestone Indy Lights ladder series, the Ferrari Challenge, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship over the course of the three-day July 8-10 weekend. Not bad for a race that started 25 years ago.
